So far, so good...

My first official day at the bigger bookstore was last Saturday. I was on my feet for 8 hours (9 if you also consider my lunch hour) and, damn, were they screaming at me at the end of the day. But I have to admit that it wasn't so bad. I actually had fun. They move you around at the this store, from the information desk to register to recovery (putting orphan books away). All in all I was very busy which is, really, what it takes to keep me happy.

The layout of the store is probably the most difficult part of the store. The History and Social Science sections, have so many subsections that I wrote them out so when they pop up in the computer, I will know where they are, because the computer doesn't tell you what main section the sub-section is in. So when the computer states the book is in "People & Personalities" I just have to know that's in the business section. Oh, and the other crazy thing is that there is NOT a Biography section. You have to find the biography in the individual section, for example, George Washington would be in the History section (under US History if you want to be precise).

So, there you go, my first day. It felt like I was thrown into the fire, but somehow, don't know how, I survived.

And can I just ask, what is it about bookstores that seems to attract characters to work for them? And what does that say about me???

But I did get some books. I read Mary Janice Davidson's newest Betsy the Queen Vampire book Undead and Uneasy and while it was very fast read, it was just a tad, barely a tad, disappointing. The majority of the book, Betsy doesn't even interact with her love interest, much less with most of the characters you are used to. I suppose Mary Janice thought she might make up for that by bringing in characters from her Wyndham Werewolves series (Derek's Bane being one of them), but for me it just didn't do it. But on the subject of Mary Janice you have to check out her blog MJ's Musings. She writes wondefully there, if on a very erratic basis.

I am in the process of reading The Harlequin by Laurell K. Hamilton. Her books are such a treat. I will say, and this is a comment, not a complaint, that Laurell does have a habit of Anita confront people in her book and analyze everything. There are long conversations whose sole reason is for Anita (the main character) to figure out why they feel that way. But, again, not really a complain, just a comment. So far, I am not dissapointed with her book. Usually that happens near the end of the book when Laurell figures she's written enough and wraps everything up in a few paragraphs. But that still isn't enough of a disappointment to make me stop reading. The worlds she creates are too compelling not to pick up the next book and see where she is going.

Funny thing, though, I picked up, while I was in London, her very first book called NightSeer and have yet to finish it. I started reading it, oh, say, 2months ago! I will probably take it with me next week when I head to Thailand and leave it somewhere after I finish it. So, if you see a Laurell K. Hamilton book roaming around Thailand, you know who left it!
